Town Council — 2020-06-04

The Centreville Town Council held a special meeting on June 4, 2020 at 7:01 p.m.; attendees included President Jeffrey C. Morgan, Vice President Timothy E. McCluskey, member Joshua E. Shonts (via Zoom), Town Manager Steve Walls, Chief Kenneth Rhodes, Town Attorney Sharon VanEmburgh, and Town Clerk Carolyn Brinkley. The council discussed Mr. Shonts' resignation and the timing of a required special election under the Charter, with options including charter amendments, delaying the resignation, or holding both a special and the general election. Mr. Shonts agreed to re-date his resignation to be effective July 10 to avoid a special election, and Ms. VanEmburgh will prepare an ordinance to allow two two-year seats on the October ballot. The council also discussed outdoor dining; restaurants reported they are not interested in expanded outdoor seating on Lawyer's Row and the Courthouse green at this time, staff will poll restaurants about using parking spaces for seating, and Mr. Walls will consult the Maryland State Highway Administration about required barriers. Written public comments were received from Barry Feldman, Joe Brown, Dan Worth, and Caroline Huddleston, additional citizens spoke, and the meeting adjourned at 7:44 p.m.
