This January 7, 2020 ad hoc Committee meeting for the Centreville “Council of Five” was called to order, the December 19, 2019 minutes were approved, and members reviewed deliverables including Maryland Municipal League data, historical candidate residency, marketing/outreach, legal/foundational principles, and Census-based districting scenarios. The committee reviewed MML statistics on municipal districting and election cycles, discussed pros and cons learned from other municipalities, and agreed terms should be limited to three or four years (not five). Members asked for the meeting slides to be posted on the Town website, requested the Town Council’s input on whether to pursue districts, and asked that alternative districting options (including two or three districts) be developed; two draft district scenarios using the 2010 population (4 districts, one at-large) were noted (North/South and East/West). The committee set next meetings for January 22 and February 5, 2020, and members reported they felt the group was making good progress.
