A. Policy
CPD personnel involved in critical incidents that result in death or life-threatening or serious bodily injury may be
subject to a psychological evaluation by an agency approved doctor that specializes in the area of treatment.
B. Definitions
CRITICAL INCIDENT
• any event that has a stressful impact sufficient enough to overwhelm the usually effective coping skills of
an individual. Critical incidents are abrupt, powerful events that fall outside the range of ordinary human
experiences.
C. Procedure
1. Any CPD personnel involved in any critical incident shall notify his supervisor, the Lieutenant and the Chief
as soon as practical.
2. Upon notification of the critical incident, the Chief or Lieutenant should make arrangements for the
affected personnel to consult with the agency approved psychologist as soon as possible after the
incident.
3. If arrangements have been made to consult with a psychologist and upon a determination by the
psychologist, an officer should not return to duty for a period of time, the Chief will notify the Human
Resources Department, at which time a determination of type of leave to be used will be made.
D. Leave
1. Any CPD personnel involved in a critical incident may be placed on Administrative Leave at the discretion
of the Chief.
2. In addition to Section C above, any CPD personnel directly involved, either as the officer discharging the
firearm or being otherwise on the scene and actively involved, of a police involved shooting, regardless of
injury, shall be placed on Administrative Leave for at least 3 consecutive days. This does not apply to
firearms qualifications or the shooting of an animal.
